How Do We Know What Separation Anxiety Really Is?
These days, we’re all drowning in information.
Advice comes from everywhere.
Social media, friends, trainers, even that person in the park who “had a spaniel once”.
With so many voices, how are you meant to know what’s actually true?
And why should you trust what you read here?
Everything I share is grounded in the best available behavioural science - the closest thing we have to fact.
My job is to translate that science into something that actually helps you: A Spaniel guardian trying to find a clear way through your dog’s separation anxiety.
If you’d like to understand more about why science matters, and how to spot misinformation, look out for my blog:

Signs of Separation Anxiety in Spaniels
Separation anxiety is not your spaniel being naughty, dramatic, or “too attached”.
It’s a real emotional disorder.
At its core, separation anxiety is fear.
Fear is a powerful emotion. It exists to keep us safe. And just like humans, every dog feels and shows fear in their own way.
Some of the most common signs of separation anxiety include:
Vocalisation: barking, whining, howling
Destructive behaviour: chewing, scratching, tearing things up
Physical stress: pacing, trembling, drooling
Escape attempts
Toileting indoors
Distress around departure cues: putting on shoes, grabbing your coat
These behaviours aren’t choices.
They’re your dog responding to fear.

What Doesn’t Cause Separation Anxiety
The research here is very clear: many common beliefs about separation anxiety just don’t hold up when we look at what we now know.
There’s nothing to suggest that separation anxiety is caused by:
Spoiling your spaniel
Showing affection or being close to them
Letting them sleep on your bed (yes, they’re allowed!)
Sharing your sofa or furniture
Having a strong attachment to you
Being a “velcro dog” (so… a spaniel!)
Lack of discipline
Boredom
Not being “tough enough”
These ideas often come from well-meant advice that’s simply been passed along over time, even though it doesn’t reflect what we now understand to be true.
Across modern behavioural research, one finding keeps showing up:
Love does not cause separation anxiety.

The Heart of It
Separation anxiety is an expression of fear.
It isn’t caused by spoiling or love.
Separation anxiety can develop for a mix of reasons, most of them outside your control.
Your dog is not broken.
You are not alone.
Separation anxiety improves through gentle, structured alone-time training, never punishment, never “tough love”, and never forcing a dog to cope before they’re ready.
With the right support, you and your Spaniel can find peace.
